If it could be broken down into new/used dealerships and just used dealerships I will be able to complete a work/school assignment. Thanks

I own a Dodge dealership. Several years ago, the number of new auto dealerships was hovering around 21,000. However, this industry is shrinking very fast. Five years ago, there were nearly 5400 dealerships that sold Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep. Today, that number is closer to 3500. Ford and GM dealerships are closing just as fast. To get a number of used car only dealerships would be very difficult. You would have to contact the department of motor vehicles in each state to see if they would tell you how many are registered.
