This is not just in regards to hypothetical religious questions, a woman had asked a question along the lines of,

"if you were homeless, what do you think you would want most."

an answer given said,

"I'd never be in that situation
I have always worked - sometimes 2 jobs to make sure I had a roof over my head"

That wasn't the question, while it is wonderful that the answerer has always worked and supported herself, why is it so hard for some people to step out of the neat little box that is their life and think about what someone in a different situation would feel or think?

whats with the anger kate? I am just asking an opinion, had you read the entire question you would see that i have given her credit for staying out of the situation, asking why she couldn;t answer a simple hypothetical question, one that really shouldn;t take that much thought in the first place.

A lot of people are at the effect of the drama they are living. Simply put, they are watching a movie that they are a part of and can not see anything other than the role they are playing.

In order to play a role in another movie, a hypothetical one, they would first need to change out of the character they are playing. They are stuck and can not see anything else. Call it extreme focus on the life they are living.

Can you step out of the drama you are living to see the world around you in a different light?

Most of the time when people say the are stepping out, or distancing themselves, it is like a dream inside a dream. The leave the dream inside the dream but are still dreaming.

If you want better results asking hypothetical questions relate it to the person you are talking to. Like, "If your company went under and you found yourself homeless..." This won't disturb them as much as they can still play the role that they are playing, just in a dream episode...hypothetically speaking.

Simple answer: people are generally lazy. They don't want to think about a hypothetical situation, so they just go along with their current situation. People just don't like to think or use their imagination nowadays. A lot of people might think that this answer is a little harsh, but it is the truth.

people don't like stepping out of their boxes....they are afraid they might jinx things and actually end up there......then there are the ones that don't really read the questions so they can't answer them accurately.....they are just after the two points and could care less if the answer is what the person was asking for or not.....

Because some people just can't place themselves in that situation. They know there is no possibility of it happening for them, so how are they supposed to answer?

Why is it impossible for some people to accept that different people have different reactions to hypothetical questions ?

Also possible, that the response was such a simpletons answer ( a home, duhhhhh), that they needed to express more.

I'm having trouble placing myself in the shoes of someone who has trouble placing themselves in someone else's shoes. I've always been able to do it.
