Two ways to connect:

1. Through Wi-Fi: go to a public place, like a library to get free access, or pay carriers like T-mobile for access at a "hotspot", or illegally connect to someone else's wireless network (umprotected*), or your own wireless network (router-based or Internet Connection Sharing [Windows 98SE, 2000, XP only] or satellite-based wireless signal.

2.Through LAN/Ethernet or IEEE394 or USB2.0 jack & cable (each cable works only with its own type of jack) connected to a router/gateway/switch connected to/that is part of an external cable/dsl modem.

* while it is possible to crack WEP & WPA-PSK (upto AES-128bit) encryption and access "protected" networks, newer networks based on WPA2 are hard to break into; for legal reasons, I am not mentioning the means required for such "cracking"

Do you mean through a network?? Just plug it into a router that is connected to the modem.
