why geocities failed?

why geocities.com failed to impact the internet world? what could be the reasons?

I think it did impact the internet world, but market forces and the advent of free blogs rendered it obsolete.

Some of the reasons I can think of:

1. Ads take up too much of the page.
2. There are better alternatives like freewebs.com.
3. Many people used Geocities for personal homepages (to post their pictures and state their interests), which isn't needed now since you can do all that on MySpace.
