Okay, some of you are taking my question the wrong way. I am not wanting poverty to end only in the United States, I just think we need to realize how many people in the United States are at the poverty level and not only pay attention to those abroad in Africa, etc. Obviously, I am aware of the countries that are worse off than us as far as starvation, lack of safe drinking water, AIDS, etc. I pose the question because I'm quite ashamed of the poverty that exists in this country that is supposedly so great and supposedly full of opportunity. In fact, I myself and my family are living at poverty level and this is why I ask.

I am terribly sorry for this answer but it appears to me that the rich keep getting richer and the poor continue to be poor....Its a sad thing when you have people starving, wondering where the next meal is coming from, and on the other end of the scale you have people eating sixty dollar steaks. Granted some people make their own wealth but not all of us have that opportunity. The bright side to all this is that all the riches in the world wont help you to get into heaven.Live your life right and in the end you to shall be wealthy!!!!Thank GOD.

You are asking two very different questions at the same time. Poverty is not the same as the poor-rich gap. Poverty is absolute-level concept; the poor-rich gap is a relative-level concept. So which one are you interested in?
To start with, poverty in the U.S. is in many respects a racial phenomenon. See, for example, here:
http://papers.nber.org/papers/W8524
So doing something about poverty will require doing something about racism first...

We need to take out the state and federal governments, make the almighty Amerikkkan dollar worthless, then ensure that former officials are never allowed to see the light of day again. Then we can see some end to poverty and bridge the gap. There should be no bridge to gap in the first place. "They" want it like this.

The world is full of poverty. Not for one minute you should just be considering the U.S.A. Places like Africa are made of people in poverty. When everyone becomes aware of other human beings and how they are, is when poverty is.

As government grows, so does the income gap.
As government dependence grows, so does the income gap.
As the spread of victimhood grows, so does the income gap.
As the illegitimacy rate grew, so grew the income gap.
As politicians try to save people, more people need saving.
In thousands of years of politicians and government existing, if they could have gotten it right - they would have.
For God's sakes, leave people alone to live freely. Keep treating poor people like they are helpless new born blind puppies, and they will keep being poor.
-----
This administration here and now declares unconditional war on poverty.
-Lyndon B. Johnson
I wonder if Enron and WorldCom are jealous that the government is allowed to fail and screw people over for decades?

Being 'wealthy' is relative. i'd be spiritually wealthy or bodily wealthy, or, both. I take position to grant because i have been without formerly and understand what that is like now to not be able to even purchase a toothbrush. give up annoying about something else of the international and do what you're able to doing on your human being. something else of the international will look after itself. It wasn't meant to be positioned on anybodies shoulders.

It'll never end, there will always be that lazy slob that floats through life living off the government. And I feel the biggest problem in America is education.

Oh, please, not more liberalism. The main problem today is obesity, but the only thing that will cure poverty is a good attitude, skills and work.
Stop thinking of it terms of something that has to be cured from the outside. It can't. People can only change from within.

Give the poor a chance for a good education to get a good job/career. and then the chance will be there to better themselves. If they choose not to do this, then they have nothing to complain about
