In a shop or petrol station, some of the staff look at you and one says something to the other that is not in the English language. They laugh.
You feel that they just insulted you and consider it "clever" that you do not understand the insult.
Any similar experiences - what did you do / what would you do ?

A 'knee jerk' reaction would be to poke them both in their eyes with a Sharp stick.
However, what if you had completely misread the situation, it is possible isn't it?
So the 'correct' response is to walk away.
It is really unlikely that these staff people would deliberately insult you, even if its just because you may understand their language.
I lived for some time in a tourist type village in North Wales UK,
I picked up quite a lot of the language and spoke to the locals in Welsh whenever I could, they mostly always spoke in their own tongue to each other.
It has always surprised me when I now hear English people talking about the Welsh using their own language in their own country, as if there was a big conspiracy going on .
If a group of overseas people are together in America or the UK they will be much more comfortable speaking to each other in their Mother tongue, so give them the benefit of the doubt!
Then poke their eyes out!!!
Hope this helps??

Learn a few words in their language. 'Have a nice day' or words to that effect. Responding with pleasantness to rude people is extremely satisfying.

As a consumer, it is your right to vote with your feet. If you feel embarrassed, do not go back.
But, is it possible that you did misread the situation?

Smile at them with the look that says " I understood every word of that" and then walk out looking smug

Had that problem at one of our local gas stations - and I've never gone back. I did call the manager, also.
