To run efficiently, you should have at least 20-30% or the hard-drive free. If you are struggling to to keep enough free space, you have a few options, depending on your budget. Oh, and a disc clean-up is not really a solution here as you've discovered, as will not recover enough space to be worth it in your situation

*Upgrade your hard-drive (this of course is not the best option, but had to mention)
*Could get a second hard-drive added - it usually won't cost a lot to get it installed for you, and then you won't have the worries of technical issues. That would then become a storage drive.
*If adding an extra drive is too costly, you may well want to look at a removable hard-drive. You can often find up to 100GB drives for around the same price you'd be looking at for a decent 1GB USB stick.

*Of course if cost is really limited, you can always turn to your CD/DVD burner and a pack of disc to store your files and get them off your HDD - this of course won't offer a solution if you simply have too many software applications install, but is certainly better than doing nothing

Check your free space by right clicking on the drive to check in My Computer and going to Properties. If you have under 500MB-1GB, I would definitely free up some space. You could also buy anther hard drive, they are quite cheap...just check out TigerDirect.
