The equipment (helmet, boots etc.) is important, but the clothes you wear are just as important. You will not have a good time if you are freezing your a** off. Layers are your best bet, so you can add or remove things depending on the temperature. Waterproof snowpants and jacket are a must, especially if you are a beginner, you will be spending a lot of time on your butt. Don't forget warm mitts, goggles and a scarf (or something else to cover your face).

As long as you have on a helmet, some knee pads, and some wrist guards, you could go naked if you wanna.
Helmet in case you fall and smack your head.
But you WILL fall, and you WILL fall on your knees and wrist. Don't wait for a broken wrist and an "I told ya so"
