I don't think all the buying in stores has anything to do with Jesus' birthday. The Christian churches begin Christmas season with advent. That is a build up toward Christmas the four Sunday's preceding Christmas.

Other old traditions began celebrating Christmas by bringing in the Yule log for the fire, and the freshly cut Christmas tree on Christmas eve. Part of this early rush began when people no longer used live trees lit with candles. You could see why those pine trees with real candle fires on them HAD to be fresh for Christmas, so your house wouldn't burn down.

When I was younger, No Christmas advertising could begin until after Thanksgiving. People would have thought it sacriligeous and boycotted the stores. Then it began creeping toward Halloween.

It's all about profit. Many stores will admit, the majority of their profits are made during the Christmas season. I am an artist, considering putting out a sign to open my studio for sales. I have the zoning permission & retailers license. I know that if I do not do it the month or two preceding Christmas, I might as well wait until next year. People take out loans for Christmas giving from all that advertising pressure about how if you really love people, you buy them this, that, and the other. I know people will be too broke after Christmas to consider artwork, until next Christmas. Yet, I have not put up the sign. . .

If we were REALLY Celebrating the birth of Jesus, the celebration WOULD NOT END the moment the stores close for Christmas. It's getting to where radio stations won't even play Christmas music all of Christmas day. They'll play it well BEFORE Christmas though. That music is about setting the mood for Buying!

It's not about Jesus, or even Christmas, but about the greed of merchandisers to make money.

We try to put up a tree (that I've planted, pruned, and many years later cut), the week before Christmas, but people think you're weird to leave it up for the 12 days of Christmas, which occur AFTER Christmas, celebrating the coming of the magii, the 3 "Wise Men".

My own mother wants her artificial tree up at Thanksgiving, and wants everyone to take it down for her during the Christmas dinner.

We wonder why people are superficial and easily depressed! It is difficult, but necessary to keep your own spirituality and personal values separate from a sold out world.

I love Christmas time, but when the stores and media and radio start to hype it up this early, it takes the whole spirit and meaning out of it. It is so commercialized anymore.
I am not ready for Christmas until about the 3rd week of December.
Too bad there are radio stations by me that play 24/7 Christmas music beginning the day after Halloween.

They put up decorations to make you purchase something for Christmas, not so much about remembering the birth of Jesus. Unfortunately.

I think people like to prolong the joy of Christmas and they enjoy puting up all the pretty decorations-
Me, I'm not ready for Christmas yet, I think this year has flown by and it's not time to celebrate yet.

Christmas hasn't been about Jesus in decades
AND WE LIKE IT THAT WAY but religious people should be allowed to make it about Jesus as well as have public displays ! ( WE ARE ALSO FAIR )
