Why do you see films like Lord of the the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean and many others getting so much money in so little time?
Why do people want to watch the movies?
Is it because they're BIG? Because of the grandiosity of the story? Like Lord of the Rings?
Or is it the "cool" characters in peculiar situations?
What makes a movie so popular?

If you define popularity by box office success, then there are many things that can make a movie popular, but while it helps if the movie is actually good, being popular does not mean that is good.

Films draw audiences for many reasons, but not necessarily all possible reasons:
1. Based on a story/idea that is already popular - (e.g., Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings) People often like to see the visual representation of their favorite book (or video game), or a well-loved/hated person.

2. Well known cast/director - Some people will flock to a film for little reason more than it has a particular actor as the hero or an iconic director.

3. Good marketing - The Blair Witch Project developed this through the internet, sparking talk that it might actually be based on a true story - it wasn't, nor was it really that good.

4. It is a critical success. I'd guess that most people at least consider how movie critics rate a film, but when a movie is not shown for critics prior to the release, it is usually very bad, and yet some movies are a success in the first week despite that.

5. Audiences actually like it. A movie that spurs great word-of-mouth can become popular as well. My Big, Fat Greek Wedding was an enormous success but had very little marketing.

Number of reasons...the audience want to see their favorite actors, they want to see the cool special effects. People just like a good story whether it's a comedy or an action flick. It's good escapism.

Story, setting, characters, ending. If these are all good, then most people will go see them.

people like to delve into escapism. movies are stories of people doing what most people want to do but can't. in life, we are forced to rein our selves in. so we love stories of those who do whatever they want. this is why crime movies are so popular.
