I used stuff like Ivory snow with my son, but it is just so expensive. Now that I am pregnant again, and about to have the baby, I have new clothes that need to be washed, and just wondering how much it really matters if you use special or regular detergent... or maybe if I just use half of what I normally would?

Try it for a few weeks just to be sure that your baby's skin would react and break out in a rash. Thats why I did with tide and now I use it and she is fine...If you notice a rash or your baby having a plugged up nose make sure its the detergent and not just mucus coming out...

Because my husband and I both have sensitive skin, and I'm allergic to quite a few detergents, I used baby detergent with my son. For all my shirts, since I nursed, and his clothes. I did it for about two months (I think I used up two bottles of Dreft.) Then I started washing my own clothes in our regular detergent, and after a week, when he didn't react, I stopped using the baby detergent all together.

My daughter is due in a few days, and I've washed all her new clothes and bedding in Dreft- the same bottle I started with my son. I won't probably do my clothes this time, I'll just keep an eye on her. If she doesn't show any signs of breaking out, then I will probably just finish off this bottle and be done with it.

Anyhow, if you and your husband don't have any issues with chemicals or sensitive skin, it might not be worth it. For us, though, since there are only about 2 detergents we can both live with, it made sense.

Hope that helps!

I used the baby detergent twice as a first time mother and realized that it didn't actually clean anything (the formula left stains). I tried my regular detergent which happened to be whatever was on sale that week and my neither of my children have ever been bothered by it. With my second baby I had left over baby detergent from my first so I did use that for the initial wash of the new clothes but after that I switched to regular detergent. You can just test your baby by washing a blanket in regular detergent and see how they handle it. Neither of my kids had extra sensitive skin so it wasn't a problem for me. Good luck to you !

Babies have sensitive skin, so it is better to use a softer detergent for them. You could try to use regular detergent but I would hold off until the baby is 6 mos or so. I've never actually used regular detergents for my children until they were about 1, so personally I don't know what might happen. My children in particular have had sensitive skin as babies, almost like a temporary case of eczema, and I can only bathe them in oatmeal soap, Aveeno, because the regular baby soap made them get more rough patches than normal.

I don't know I think the precaution is worth the extra expense. Just my 2 cents.

The only time you really need special detergent for babies is if your baby is allergic to your regular detergent. And the only way you'll know that is after (s)he's born. Maybe wash some stuff w/ special, and the rest w/ regular. Test the reg, and if (s)he's allergic. Also, maybe just an extra rinse cycle w/ just water would help to get the extra detergent rinsed out - good luck!

I agree. Don't bother with the expensive baby safe ones. Use ones without scents. I think Tide carries a detergent that is free of any smell or harsh chemicals. I have been using the regular Tide for my sons clothes and cloth diapers since he was born and he is fine. If you do decide to use regular detergents, just watch out for any skin reactions in your baby (nothing will happen but be on the look out just in case).

Just use what you use. If your baby were allergic to your detergent it would have a reaction from touching your clothes with its skin.

You can buy regular stuff thats clean and clear, or fragrance free, and for sensitive skin is even better. The prices are much cheaper on regular detergents.

You can even use less soap for baby's loads, cutting down on the chance of irritation.

Ive never known anyone who actually used special baby detergent, its just rediculously expensive. You can always switch to something different if baby shows signs of a reaction.

I used IVORY for maybe 2 loads....and the rest I just washed with normal detergent. If there's signs of a skin reaction then I would switch but other than that, you're right, it's too expensive.

For my sis new born clothes they use Skip detergent, which is good and not to expensive. Just remember when washing new clothes for the baby use a little detergent, and soak it in water. To get a good clean. Also add a little Fabric Softener.

I used Arm & Hammer the first few months, but I used it for all our clothes because it is on sale. I did use about 3/4 what the bottle said for the baby loads.

I think it is more important to give clothes an extra rinse, some like to put 1/2 cup vinegar in the first rinse (You can use a fabric softener ball to dispense it)

Maybe buy unscented and dye free for the whole family.

But I never bothered too much. (Now cloth diapers are different because the wrong detergent can effect their absorbancy)

Oh and NEVER use liquid fabric softener on baby clothes it causes them to become flammable.
