There is a tradition of directors using the pseudonym Alan Smithee when they are too ashamed of the movie they've directed to have their own name on it. These days it's largely a symbolic act of protest over studio meddling that results in a crappy film.

Because the TV station that showed it cut it so much he no longer felt that it was the film he had created.

In this case he managed to get his name removed from it, as it was indeed so far from his original film, and replaced with Alan Smithee.

I don't know why he didn't take his name off of it when it originally came out in '84. It was an incomprehensible mess.
