I assume you mean the Mexican American War?

The primary cause of the Mexican American War was the US's admission of Texas as a State. This is the main reason why Texas remained independent for nine years. Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836, but was not admitted to the Union until 1845.

After Texas' independence, Mexico threatened war with United States if the US made it a state. Between 1936 and 1845, the growing Manifest Destiny movement, culminating with the election of James K. Polk, wanted war with Mexico to expand the boarders of the United States to the Pacific Ocean.

Some of the results of the Mexican American War we are still feeling today. Mexico lost 2/3 of its land to the US, but there is misinterpreted clause in the Treaty of Guadalupe that illegal immigrants claim allows them to live and work in the United States. Basically, the treaty guarantees the right of Mexicans that lived in Mexico's territories ceded to the US to live and work in the new US territories, and after a year become US Citizens. Today, many illegal immigrants mistakenly claim that gives them the right to enter, live, and work in the US. However, this right was only given to Mexicans who lived in the ceded territories at the time the treaty was signed.

Many people may feel that this grave injustice done to Mexico justifies allowing waves of illegal immigrates to stay in the US. However, what most people fail to realize is that you cannot look at a treaty signed over 150 years ago and apply today's standards to it. The world has changed dramatically since than; furthermore, in the land purchased from Mexico by the US, a condition of the treaty, there were very few Mexicans actually living in that territory. The vast major of the population of those territories were indigenous Indians, who did not speak Spanish and had little or no contact or loyalty to Mexico.
