These days a printer is not much more costly than a ink cartridge. I would splash out on a new printer

If you have a decent printer and want best quality then really you need to buy original cartridges. I had a decent printer but cartridges kept drying out because I didnt use it often enough. My solution - Argos had a special deal on a Lexmark - £19.99 (you'd need a USB cable too). Includes the colour cartridge which works fine for black so long as you dont mind it not being quite as 'sharp' as using a black only cartridge. My old cartridges were £23/£25 each. Refill for my new on is about £12 for the colour one - haven't checked out price of black.

I agree with the environment issue and at the moment I am holding on to my old printer until I can find somewhere that does recycling.

It depends on which printer you have - I know some inks are more expensive then a replacement in some cases.

However, if you have an expensive printer and want to print buy a cartridge

I have always found that printers work far better with an ink cartridge fitted. The alternative answer to your question is that you could risk stealing them, but be careful you don't get caught.

WARNING you may invalidate your warranty if you use non manufacturers ink

but you can buy ink cheaply from many different suppliers but you must take into account that with the price difference comes a quality drop
