If you went to your primary care physician, and discussed mental health issues, he might give you a referral to a Psychiatrist of therapist. If you went to a Psychiatrist for medication intervention, he/she might decide psychotherapy was needed instead of or in addition to the meds and give you a referral to a psychotherapist he works in conjunction with. Psychotherapists do not prescribe medications and Psychiatrists do medication intervention and monitoring but often have colleages for intensive "talk" therapy. Does this help?
