How Did the Greek Letter Lambda Become a Gay Symbol?

I understand how the pink triangle and the rainbow flag became associated with gays, but not the history of the letter lambda.

How did that come to symbolise gay people?

It came from the movie NERDS, Lambda, lambda, Lambda. Where in the movie of Nerds, it did not matter what type of people that was a nerd.
