I have understood it to refer to being daring, provocative, or to pushing the envelope.

I learned about it in college in reference to the graphic designer Herb Lubalin. he did amazing things of his time with typography.

he created the font avant garde, and also had a magazine by the same name. the logo is still widely recognized.

regardless, he knew the rules so well, that he knew the perfect ways to break them to make designs that were beyond the typical.

I believe that it means to be on the cutting edge. Anything that is new, experimental, or unorthodox.

It is normally used to refer to new and unconventional art.
