Hi, I hear that 2001 Goldwings have a built in intercom system, but do not really know what I would need to buy to enable it. I know there are mics and speakers, but are these built into helmets or can you get them separate? My mom just bought my dad really nice Shoei helmets last year, so would this mean she'd have to buy different ones to get the intercom to work, or is there something that can just be placed inside the existing helmets? Thanks so much for any help!

The only issue will be if the helmets are set up to accept speakers. Not all are. If there are pockets for the speakers around the ears you'll be fine. By pockets, I mean actual sleeves that the speakers slide into, not just an empty spot with little or no padding.

Some helmets with-out pockets will have problems getting the speakers to mount flush enough to not cause comfort issues while wearing them.

The Honda branded speakers/mics, like the intercom system itself on the 'wing are made by J&M. If I'm not mistaken they are a 5 pin set up. Honda only offers one 'level' of headset for either open face or full face. J&M offers many different styles and 'levels' so that you can find something to suit your needs and budget and these pieces are available through most any motorcycle shop. Check and see what suits your purposes best and who has the better deal.

Good luck!

Honda makes a microphone that clamps onto any helmet and speakers that fit into any helmet. The speakers are about the size of a quarter. You'll have to order the stuff from Honda to get the plug that fits into the outlet on your Goldwing.

Hi there,
You will be able to use existing helmets. There are mics and speakers available on the market that will do what you want. Talk to your Honda man, he will be more than happy to advise.
