The play is inspired by a famous artist music, aside from getting permission from the artists label and getting my material wright protected. What are the next steps I would need to take to get this on broadway?

You need to find an agent who will try and get an angel or two to put up the money to produce it.

That may be more work than writing your opus

You might consider the model that Best Little Whorehouse in Texas used. It got work shopped at a college and grew from there.

Expect a lot of changes and re-writes. Perhaps you should find an agent who will shop your product around to producers.

Luck!

You have to produce it somewhere small first. Especially if it's your first work. Get some friends together and put it on. Workshop it. Work out the kinks, then do it again.
