For those in the UK, did anyone else see this story about these prisoners who are going to sue because when they were sent to prison they were made to go 'cold-turkey' (i.e. not allowed to take drugs) and therefore it is a breach of their human rights?

Can somebody please reassure me that this is some sort of wind-up or at least an error by the media?

It not a wind up and they will win.

The writers of the Human Rights act did not intend this type of lunacy, but their negligence has allowed it.

I'm going to ask a question to see whether compensation could be claimed against the drafers of this Law as it was obviously flawed and inept

Another example of the F***ed Government's plans. They will
blame it on the Humans rights act.

It is not a hoax as the Government could be sued by these idiots
for making them go Cold Turkey, even although it's for there own good.

Maybe if all Junkies were in prison without drugs and all going cold turkey, they would think twice about mugging an old granny.

I don't necessarily think they deserve compensation, but I agree that in future they need to be sure to get drug addicts off their substance before putting them in jail. The reason being, it can be very very dangerous to go cold turkey with some substances. Heroin withdrawl can kill someone or make them very, very sick- they need medical care throughout the process. Sometimes they are weaned off with methadone, sometimes they are put in a false coma for the duration. I don't condone illegal drug use, but I don't think they should be knowingly put in a situtation where they could die. We'd put them in hospital for any other illness. Addiction is a mental illness of it's own which requires professional treatment and they deserve to have their basic human rights respected- they have already received a sentence to reflect their crime, so denying them medical care is not necessary or deserved.

Someone in my family in America was sent to prison due to a drug offence. He had a serious alcohol addiction, so he carried out the first weeks of his sentence in rehab, being weaned off alcohol safely because by that point, cold turkey could have killed him. I think everyone deserves that much. We are not in a position to compromise people's physical health, that's not what the UK's justice system is about.

No this is not a wind up...I was just coming on here myself to see if anyone else thought this government had gone completely insane?????
w t f is going on Why should my hard earned money( Yes its the tax payer who is paying) be spent paying compensation for criminals because they were addicted to illegal drugs, got sent to prison for committing a crime,(to feed the drug habit no doubt) then could not get supplied with illegally smuggled drugs to fund their illegal habit.I have had enough of this utter insanity and if someone said there was a protest on Saturday to get these idiots out of downing street i would be at the front!!!
But then again I would probably be arrested and imprisoned for protesting against a drug induced minority and fined for my trouble also ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The "druggies" should be paying the prison service for getting them off drugs.
You could pay a lot of money,to receive exactly the same treatment (cold turkey)from Buddhist Monks in Thailand.

No, it is not a wind up. I think that the point they are trying to make is that there should be proper and better provision for those entering prison who are already on methadone or similar and trying to kick their habit. They have started on a course of detox gradually and then they get sent to prison and are taken off their detox programme which is self-defeating and a waste of time and money.

It is totally the wrong thing to do.

So we reward criminals??? How many other criminals will go to jail just to get their hands on tax payers money?

It started with slopping out...I mean if the prisoners didn't clean up their own sh!t an pi$$, who's gonna?? The wardens? And are they gonna get thousands of pounds cleaning up other people bodily waste? I don't think so.
Nurses clean up other peoples waste every day....Do thet get loads of money for that? No I don't think so....

It's just a bleedin' joke....Maybe the government should get tough with criminals...I mean if they didn't offend in one way or another, they wouldn't be in jail...No doubt they'd be at home cleaning their own toilets and getting jack for it.

Too many do gooders in power....You try an get money from the government as compensation for one of these wasters wronging you...FAT CHANCE!

Ive witnessed a lot of cold turkey in my day...and the first 3 days are the worst....VERY similar symptoms to a bad flu...thats all!

No wonder the prisons are overcrowded and the government has no cash...druggie criminals must be thrilled at the idea of going to prison and then suing for anything and everything. Its a damn disgrace and someone somewhere needs their head examined....are you listening Mr Blair???

This is disgusting for them to even think about compensation. You know they'll only blow it on more drugs!!! They complain about human rights- what about the rights of people suffering from war and famine and abuse! They are in prison for crimes committed so need rehab of course but they bring on themselves so why take pity on a junkie who is out for getting more cash to feed their habit!!

That's a serious loophole in the law, so anyone can commit a crime, claim to be a addict and then sue the government?
They need to be brought down to earth, you go in prison and live by the rules.
sod that I'd make them squeal for their fix as it's no excuse for crime
