No re-fill is poor service, with not checking back its BAD service. The server should notice the amount in your glass when she delivers the food to the table, but it never hurts to ask for the soda re-fill or more ice T or water when she/he brings the food to the table and your glass is 3/4 full. I have always apologized when I get an unexpected rush and wasn't able to check back with a table like I should have. As for the constant bad timing of asking about the meal by a server. We do that on purpose!!! Just kidding, but I try to get back for the 2 bite rule...to make sure everthing is ok with the meal, and it must be or you wouldn't be eating. I smile and apoligize for interupting or catching the customer just as they took a bite, but I will wait patiently if they look like they want to say something. Thanks tonight when I go to work I will keep your pet peeve in mind and not let any one have a empty glass. But that could be a bad thing in the bar. Yes I've been guilty in the past of over looking a re-fill and I've been doing better and this section will help me to see the customers side of bad service and help me to improve even more. I've been doing this type of work for 20 years and I can still forget something when I have 100's of things going through my brain while being really busy.

You have received inadequate service , but perhaps not bad. Was the waitress really busy, it could have just been an oversight on her part? It irratates me as well, but you can't sweat the small stuff. I do not like to wait on my drink but, I hate it if they fill it after you have taken 2 swallows and then you have to try to sweeten your tea 15 times for one glass so, it is kind of a happy medium and maybe your waitress was new and inexperience. Tip less if you feel you had inadequate service and when they ask you at the end of a meal if there will be anything else politely say yes, next time please refill my drink more often.
Although I see your point and share your pet peeve... Have a heart being a waitress is not an easy job....

I completely agree with you.
I like to eat spicy food so I need to have my drink refilled constantly. I actually just quit eating until I get some service. I would and do consider that to be bad service.
On the other hand, I don't like the waiter/waitress checking up every 5 seconds either. I just wish they would keep an eye on my drink and refill when needed. No questions asked. I had almost all my food left once and my drink was empty. The waitress actually asked me if I wanted a refill.........Uhm, yeah, that would be nice.

DBF and I went out for wings the other night and we both ordered water with lemon and I ordered something from the bar. Our waitress brought one kids size water-no lemon. When we reminded her that we both ordered water with lemon, she asked if we could just share it. I still can't believe that she actually asked that. After she said that, I went up and found the manager. I explained to him our problem. He apologized and brought us our water and he directed her to the bar for my drink. Then, I had ordered 12 boneless wings and I got 4 bone-in wings. DBF had ordered 24 bone in wings and he got 1 wing. When I again corrected her, she showed us the receipt and that is indeed what she had put down for out order. I contacted the manager and he got us the correct food and told us that we wouldn't be charged for our meal. While we were eating, we were both out of water and I asked the waitress for more water-she was sitting a few tables over on her cell phone-she said, "Um, I'm busy. Can you go up to the bar and ask for a refill?" We promptly got up, told the manager about our awful experience and left. A friend of mine works there and when I told her about it, she said that the waitress was complaining about a table who kept complaining to the manager and didn't even leave her a tip.
I judge a place very heavily on whether they ask about refills-I drink my water very fast. I have been known to leave a $15 tip at IHOP for great service and $3 at Outback for bad service.

I totally agree.
Bad service.
I drink a lot of water all the time, and when I drink all my glass & it aint refilled, I get PISSED.
Nothing to wash down the tasty meal with.
So I don't leave em a big tip.
Unless there's a busy day in the restaurant and I know why they haven't come ;-)

you just get bad service, it seems, i am a waiter , and, i constantly am looking at the tables to see if they need anything, i try not to ask them more then twice if everything is going well, because i dont want to annoy them, if i see there drink is less then half, i automatically take them one over, because refills are free where i work, i dont even ask them if they would like another, works so far, i almost always get my 20% tip.

I don't get irritated until they walk by me ten times without noticing my saying "Excuse me, may I have a refill?" That and when they ask you how the food is when you have food in your mouth.

I feel that if your glass sits there empty, then indeed, your service is poor. A server should make rounds to check on her diners.
