This is really odd - I did this today!! I've just bought a Phillips webcam with a built-in microphone (about £50) and I've been using it all day to chat to friends and family via MSN.
The answer to your question is quite simply - get yourself the latest version of MSN Messenger. Its called Windows Live Messenger 8.0 and you can get it here:
http://get.live.com/messenger/overview
It will overwrite your old version during the install. Very easy.
When you've installed it, the next thing to do is to make sure that the person you want to chat to has it installed too. You both have to be using the latest version for it to work properly - but believe it or not, only one of you needs to have a webcam (its just more fun with two). If you have a webcam and the other person doesn't you can still choose to be seen and heard and they type their responses back to you. Its a much better way to communicate.
To set up windows live messenger, simply go to "Tool" and then to "audio and video setup" and follow the instructions. Its very simple to set up. Three clicks can get you started immediately.
Then message the other person and click the little camera next to your picture...you can choose to do a "webcam only" broadcast (ie no audio, so you type your responses) or a "video chat" which allows you to be seen and heard.
The webcam I am using is :

The Phillips SPC900, with built in microphone.
It takes the hassle of a headset away and you literally just put it on top of your monitor and talk away...it even has face recognition software so it follows your face like your very own camera man. Very useful - total hands free communication...its literally like sitting opposite the person.
Good luck with it! And enjoy your new webcam revolution!

You have a large choice, MSN , Yahoo messenger, SKYPE and lots of others, all have there personal differences,SKYPE can be used at the same time as the others, the main thing is you must have the same system as the person you want to speak with, oh and a web cam and a mike, and it is worth the trouble to get a good cam if you have the means. the cheaper ones are at times a little slow.

Hugs Scooter. the way issues are goin i'm greater vulnerable to 2 soup cans and a length of string. It in no way looked ordinary as a toddler to be 10 feet away, yelling right into a soup can, "Can Ya hear Me Now?" Sleep candy. Dallas
