Generally, a high-quality blend of cotton and linen. US currency is printed on a 75% to 25% cotton/linen blend; other countries use a similar blend but often with different ratios of cotton to linen.

Recently, some countries have begun to use plastic (polymer) currency notes, because they are thought to be more durable and harder to counterfeit.
