The recent decision to allow a lawyer into court wearing a mask frightens me. I have been asked to cash a cheque by someone wearing a veil. they would not remove it and I did not know if it was a man or a woman.
What next?

Some of you seem to have missed my point. espcially happy heather.
It was not me cashing a cheque (check the spelling) I had a small lbusiness and someone came into the shop with a cheque for a large amount of money. It is quite normal to ask for identity in fact my bank did to me yesterday. I was not concerned if it was a man or woman but given ID I could not confirm that it was that person in front of me.
To Ian:-) yes banks do ask for ID when cashing cheques for large amounts of cash in fact most banks ask you to make an appointment for amounts over £500.
Believe it or not I am a Liberal and don't care if you go around stark naked or covered from head to toe. My point is that there are places where security is required.(for starters how does the judge know that he is speaking to a lawyer) I assumed that a courtroom should be a secure place, forgive me if I'm wrong,I've never been into one. The point is these cases are all done to set a norm. it could be a problem later.

Turkey and Tunisia have banned the veil.
Saudi Arabia do not allow it when you go to Mecca. This is NOT a religious thing. My concerne is that some of these people are just trying to make a point and that they never wore one until now. THIS WILL BACKFIRE as it WILL push the natives to far right wing parties. Just look at some of the answers to any racial question.
I have lived in a country governed by the far right and I would not like to see that happen here but I think it is too late.

Hold up! Why has this a problem all of sudden? People were wearing veils ages ago and no one complained then!

Note: I dont wear a veil but I believe everyone has the right to wear what they like as long as it isnt hurting anyone.

Anymore thumbs down?

I have three things to ask you:
1. Please post the link to the lawyer thing you made reference to; I'm curious about the circumstances surrounding that decision. What is it about this that "frightens"you?

2. If an employee of wherever it was you went to cash a check was wearing a veil, obviously their employer had no problem with it, as asking that employee to remove it would have likely constituted some sort of religious discrimination. If the employer had no problem with it, why do you?

3. What difference does the person's gender make when it comes to something like cashing your check? Besides, it is pretty easy to assume that the employee was female. Have you ever seen a male wearing a veil?

What next? I'm guessing that freedom of religion will stay in place, at least wherever it was that you cashed your check. Can you wear a mask into a bank? Sure, by all means, go ahead. There are some very nice people in law enforcement who will be happy to chat with you about your wardrobe accessorizing.

Do you mean that someone wearing a veil asked you to cash a cheque? Or that someone asked you to put on a veil and cash a cheque ?

If it's the former and you don't know if they're a man or a woman then why are you cashing cheques for strangers anyway?

If it's the latter then you're either being wound up or you doing the winding

Thoroughly confusing...

You can wear a mask into a bank, but since banks (if they are doing their jobs) require ID with transactions, you would have to take your mask off so they could make sure it was you. I'm not sure what to say about the person with the veil. Most likely it was a woman, but you never know, it could be a man in disguise.

What is the policy where you work? This must have happened in the past to someone else. How did they deal with it and what is the official line where you work? It is important to know what the company position is as you will be the one probably that is in trouble over this if someone decides to make a complaint and you have acted completely off your own back. Best to have some sort of fallback to cover your own a--e on this one.

I politely must say - HELL NO! I worked for a bank a long time ago (got tired of having a gun in my face) when a kid came in wearing a mask -- the guards tackled him and called the cops. It seems that he was riding a motorcycle (thus the mask) and it was cold -- bet he remembers to take it off the next time!! It is a felony.

Everyone that enters the bank should be required to reveal their face to the security cameras. If we really have to be PC then give them a private corner where they can reveal their goodies to the camera and then put the veil back on before proceeding to their business.

I presume the only way you could get away with wearing a mask in a bank would be to put a veil over the top.......

But a lawyer can get away with anything. You can not unless of course wearing the Tony Blair's mask.
