I dont think you have to if you are buying cosmetics at the counter all the time. The free makeup and massages might be something the counter people are told to do to keep customers coming back. It could just be part of their job description. But if you dont see her doing this for other people and you feel she is going out of her way, you could try and slip her a 10 or 20 or whatever. She might refuse the tip. If she doesn't however, kkeep in mind that she may expevt you to tip her everytime after that.

If you bought cosmetics from the make-up lady, you don't need to give her a tip, because she makes commission on what she sells. Actually, even if you hadn't bought any make-up, you still wouldn't need to tip her. It's her job to try her products on you to show you how well they work. She's in sales- part of a sales job is giving out free samples so the client can be impressed and buy some of their own.

No a tip is not necessary, however, IT IS expected. That is the service industry..
Depending on where you live, a good tip is considerd 15% of the total price.
Let's say your massage cost you $50, you can leave a $5 tip, instead of the 15% - which would be $7.50.

I don't understand why all these people are saying a cosmetic counter lady needs to be tipped! I go to Saks for make-up and frankly- I think they would be offended if I tried to tip them. Don't tip them. They do receive a commission if you buy something. I would feel rude if they did a makeover and I didn't buy anything.

It's typically 15% of the bill. But tips are usually for services/food etc.. what I usually do is double the tax (since NYC is 8 point something percent anyways)
But when it comes to a department store. Hell no, you dont tip. They might take offense. They usually get some sort of commission anyways and their job is to help you with your purchase.

I would not tip in a department store....they are there getting paid to do those things on top of a commission that they make. I would never tip them

If you go on a regular basis, then I think a $5 tip would be nice!

some stores will not let their associates take a tip or a reward. their reward are the purchases you make....always use the same saleclerk if she or he is available......i worked at dillards at the estee lauder counter and we could not take a tip, as it was grounds for termination.....get to know your salesgirl....she could drop a clue about it.......
