my university requires you to do it the last semester before graduation. If you do it out of sequence, you're missing important pedagogy, theory and technical advice. Plus, as someone mentions there are so many prerequisites, that it's virtually impossible to take it out of sequence (read: during your junior year instead of senior year).
Good Luck!

You will learn so much in your student teaching and you need to have all your college classes done before hand. Once you student teach, you will dying to jump into teaching and have your own classroom -- the last thing you will want to do is go back to school. And, you want all that great student teaching information fresh when you start your own classroom or begin subbing.
I had friends who chose to student teach and then go back for one more quarter and they hated it. It was terrible and their college grades suffered because they didn't want to be their anymore -- they wanted to be in the classroom.
Student teach the last quarter of your senior year.

Most people do their student teaching in their senior year, mostly because practically all of the other courses you'll take are prerequisites for student teaching.

I had internships throughout junior and senior year, ending with one semester full time in a classroom before graduation. You don't do that semester until you've taken all the methods classes.

It depends in what program you are in and what Univeristy. In an after-degree program (where you need a Bachelor's degree first), you are in doing your teaching practicum in the first year. If you are going for a 5 year degree, my friends were teaching in the 4th and 5th years.

1974. Each college has different prerequisites, so you must look those up based on the college you are attending. I can tell you from my experience, it was always in the Senior year.
