Christmas is a christian festival celebrating the birth of christ.
Winterval is a random holiday.
Everyone should be free to worship their own religion and their own festivals; otherwise every religious festival, including Muslim and Jewish etc. festivals, should be turned into summerval, happydayval etc.
England is a predominantly Christian country. Other countries follow their own religions. Christians and Christmas decorations should be shown in the christmas period in England - it is an English festival.
Actually I think it's a bit too politically correct, to be honest. Do you know that now they are calling smaller people 'vertically-challenged' now?
In the newspaper today I read that the Ethnic minorities were actually angry about the changed name 'christmas - winterval'. It induces anger in the Christian poupulations against them and they don't like that
Leave the festivals alone, I say.

There is no good reason to change the name of Christmas. Ethnic minorities expect respect for their traditions. The same should come in return. Point 1 - mutual respect for traditions. Point 2 - imagine the backlash against those same ethnic minorities if the changing of the name were tied to them. Point 3. I read a recent survey where those same wthic minorities were aganst the change of name (perhaps because of point 2, I don't know).

I ain't gong to celebrate winterval. What is that supposed to be?
We have carnival up here for anyone who doesn't like Christmas. I think all these people who don't believe in Christ should go find some better way to pass their time. You don't see any of us telling them not to celebrate whatever they do or don't believe in.
Ethnic minorites think they're offended? I'm offended. Try and stop Christmas, freaks.

Reason one:It's a commercial holiday everywhere in the world that it's celebrated. It's not a celebration of Christ's birthday, and it's not nearly when he was born.
Reason two:To remain politically correct and appeal to the masses there should be no religious connotation in the name.Especially where sales, gatherings or holidays are concerned.
Last reason:Winterval is a much more fitting name as the holiday falls right around the change of the season where as Christ wasn't even born that time of year. That can easily be deduced from the descriptions of the events surrounding his birth.

I've been thinking of something like that too. I'm all for Christ and God, but we're ruining what is supposed to be a sacred time.
Instead, why not just have a day in December to exchange presents, have it a non-religious day, and just keep Jesus in your heart and be glad He was born EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR? What we know as Christmas wasn't even celebrated until about the 3rd century anyway and it started out as a pagan holiday. I'd say it's turned back into one, now. Think about it. We've really made a mockery of it as it is now.

Since I don't live in England, I'm not really sure of the context for the name change, but I'd wager it's for school and/or government holidays.
Since Britian (like America) is a secular government, there should notbe government sanctioned religious holidays that favor one belief over the next. It's not a matter of who's right and who's wrong, but of equanimity and the minority religions are correct in squaking about it.

No I don't think that it would work here in America. I know that some people don't like the word Christmas because of the word Christ being in there and some people don't believe. I like the word Christmas and I think that it should stay.

Christmas is:
1. A celebration of the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ
2. A celebration of the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ
3. thus the name!
Any other name is a non-celebration...so no need for a name revision.
God Bless You!
