You can see stars in space

What has probably caused some of the confusion is that in a photo or video image of space, there are barely any stars unless the star is the main focal point.

Stars are much dimmer when compared to the moon, or other objects and so to get the right exposure to show stars in a picture is very difficult.

Fortunately your eyes are much better than cameras and so if your ever in space you will be able to see the beauty of stars

That's usually because the exposure on the camera is set to look at things that are very bright. For example, take a picture of an astronaut working on the Hubble telescope... the telescope and the astronaut will be lit either by the sun or bright work lights. If you take a picture you need a short exposure time or the bright objects will wash everything else out.

If, however you took a picture of empty space with nothing lit brightly in your field of view, you could have a longer exposure and then you'd see stars in the picture.

It's the same effect as on Earth. It needs to be dark enough, or you won't be able to see the stars.
