Several states had those legally shaky marriage amendments on the ballots, and I have heard a theory that a fair amount of African Americans, the majority who traditionally vote Democrat, tend to be against Gay marriage and these ballot issues motivated many to the polls to vote FOR the amendment and FOR the Democrats!
So, if this is true, could the neo cons have essentially cut of their nose to spite their face with those marraige amendment Gay baiting tactics?

I believe it hurt them. Every time a faction brings touts an issue that's tantmount to discrimination, it's going to get corresponding attention.
Besides, ask an African American exactly how well "Separate but Equal" worked out historically.

Your point about african americans is well taken. Also, the youth vote was way up this time and they generally are more tolerant of gays.
