You can embed a Quicktime or Window Media Video to your page, but a user will need the appropriate plug-ins installed to allow viewing of the movie. WMV has problems on Macs and Quicktime can be problem for users with lower versions of the plug-in. Quicktime and WMV files can be pretty big so it can be a slow response for users on dial-up or even DSL depending on the length of the video. You also run the risk of a user being able to download your video and editing it to use for their own purposes.
The best way to post a video to your site is to use Flash Video so you can take advantage of the codec's compression to make the file size significantly smaller. The Flash plug-in is also installed on 99% browsers. If you don't have the Flash authoring environment, you can submit your Quicktime, MPEG or WMV to a site like YouTube or Grouper. Those sites will convert the file to Flash Video and provide you with code to copy/paste into your site pages. Flash Video is more difficult to compromise and extract to to edit by another party. Just make sure that you put your logo or some other stamp on the video so you can claim ownership, if necessary. Also, the video is hosted on their site and you don't have to worry about the storage space or bandwidth required. The only downside is that it is publicly available for anyone to see or post to their site, if that's an issue for you.

It first needs to be in the format where it can be played by a player like Windows Media Player (.wmv) or Apple's Quicktime Player (mov.)
So, in order to do this you must have software that can put your video files in this format. I use Roxio which is a program that is very simplified and relatively easy to learn, plus it is available for only around $100 which is a bargain for all that it can do. You can capture audio and video off of a television (for example) as well as edit them both and photos. There is some learning involved in this process so be warned.
Then, when you are done with getting it all formatted if you decide to stick it out... upload it onto your site and link to it just like you would a page on your site. When it is done and you click from your browser it should play immediately.
Oh, and if you want to embed the video into your page rather than having it pop up over it, then follow the html instructions given by the person above.

Some sites like youtube have boxes containing text that are usually marked "embed" or "post on my site". Copying and pasting the HTML code into your site will post it there.
