I have often wondered that myself. I am a chubby person and would not wear it out of my house . There are somethings that larger people can't wear. I know that most of them are wearing it because they are trying to prove to themselves that they are sexy in it. They probably do not have friends who feel they can be honest enough to tell them that it looks very bad. Don't you kinda feel sorry for the ones that do wear lycra? Hopefully enough of them read the answers to your question and stop doing it.

I don't agree with the philosophy but I've been informed that the idea is that regular clothing is baggier and therefor makes you look larger than you are, if only by a couple of centimetres. Lycra is figure hugging and therefor makes you look as if you are a couple centimetres thinner... It is also for some bizarre reason considered sexy!?
Look I'm over weight and would not choose to wear it but a couple of people tried to talk me into it. I do not consider these people friends! Ugh

I wonder this sometimes also. However, I don't know that anyone really looks good in Lycra. There are some articles of clothing that manufacturers should not make in certain sizes-two piece bikinis, Lycra, halter tops...I could go on and on.

I think it helps keep their skin taunt and more supported than other fabrics. Some heavier or larger people that really care what it looks like to others as long as they are comfortable. I agree with that statement but there is a fine line that is sometimes crossed over into looking ridiculous too!

Its a mystery to me! Perhaps they just feel comfortable with the way they look and why not? I work for a mail order company and we sell a lot of large sizes. They sell pants in up to size 32 and still call them briefs! There's nothing brief about them!

I think basically because it is comfortable and a lot of clothes are not when you are bigger. Lets face it, fat people are already uncomfortable with the way they look most of the time (sorry to anyone who is happy with the way they are and good on you ) but having to wear jeans or trousers with buttons cut in and can rub and eventually leave sores etc. maybe it doesn't look good, but if they are comfortable, who are we to judge!

I think the following rule should be used for Spandex:
"Spandex is a privilege, not a right!"
No, this isn't a pop at large people; I shouldn't be seen in spandex either!

I'm not really sure because its not the most flattering item of clothing. It shows all your lumps and bumps. Maybe because its stretchy and comfortable. But only with a long jumper of course.

An elastane fibre trademarked by DuPont. Lycra is used to give comfort, movement and shape retention to a garment that will not loose its elasticity through washing.
