Any question related to physical safety IS a big deal. Every single exterior door on every inhabited house has a lock on it for a good reason. The locks are there to be used for safety. What you describe would bother me a LOT.

Get a very bright key chain and set up very specific places for keys to go. When home, the keys go on a hook in the hallway. When leaving the keys must be hooked in a certain place in a jacket or bag. Within 2 weeks it should be a habbit. Being absent minded is not a very good excuse for anything. They need to slow down and care about themselves and you!

Yes this would bother me for the simple fact that they are left outside your house all night..whos to say that someone isn't going to be walking by iin the middle of thie night..see these keys just hanging out there and walk int yuor house, hurt you or your roomate...rob you house or anything..one or two times i can see leaving them in the door we have all done it before but 8 or more times I wouldn't just shrug it off..next time he/she does it...take the keys and hide them and don't let them have them back for a while..
it might teach them,,,and tell them that you don't ahve them and make a big deal about them..make sure taht you say well great now i am gonig to have to change thelocks cuase who know's who got those keys.

I would be extremely ticked off! There's no excuse for doing that. It's a MAJOR security issue. If no one's home, your stuff can get stolen and vandalized while your away.
If he leaves for work before you and your home alone anyone can come in and harm you. Your doors should always be locked no matter whether your home or not.

YES! That means the door isn't locked and anybody could get in there! That is scary! I did that one time and freaked myself out.

When it comes to security, there should be no compromise. You should talk about this everytime it happens. Insist on change or work out other options that are convenient and safe.

I'd be ticked. The person needs to be more responsible. It's not just their stuff in the home at risk of being stolen. Tell him/her off.
