the beatles - they combined fun lyrics with great vocals and snappy hooks. It's the easy answer, I know, but I just can't answer it any other way, if I'm honest.

Honourable mention:
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
the Allman Brothers Band (their two latest Cd's may be their best)
Traffic
Phish (they play old rock, but they're not an old band)
Bob Dylan (folk rock)
Jimi Hendrix

The Beatles - they set the standard fior the rock group as a self-contained unit, each member contributing to the whole according to his abilities; changed the role of musician in society and then changed the society as a whole; changed the very idea of what fame meant; evolved faster and more completely than any performers before or since; having done all that, they went out at the peak of their game and never reunited for an embarassing rehashing of their old days of glory. This is all beside the fact that they wrote and recorded some of the best songs in the history of recorded music, not just of rock; and their legacy has touched everyone who came along afterward (not to mention everyone who came along before and was forced to deal with the changes they made). Without The Beatles, the 60's may have had no more socialogical impact than the 50's; with The Beatles, their decade shines.

Boy, a lot of people ask this question but I guess I never get tired of answering. Chicago is my favorite rock band. Adding a horn section to the group instead of just guitars and drums or keyboards was pure genius. It created a very unique sound for the day and I thought it was great. This is the very reason I say the sixties and seventies were the most inventive and best in rock history.

King Crimson. No other album has ever grabbed me and refused to let go like "In The Court Of The Crimson King" when I heard its radio debut. For my taste they were ( still are ) one of the most consistently innovative bands ever & have never put out a bad piece of work.

Nirvana! Cuz they're just cool...the whole thing over Kurt Cobain's death just makes the band that much more interesting, and his voice and lyrics have that special haunting quality on some songs...I just really like their music.

Pink Floyd. Nothing beats them. Their music is so out there beyond basic, and puts me in a mood all on its own. The Pink Floyd mood.
