It's funny to watch him be a jack @ss, I think that's the whole purpose of the show. It's just another Home Improvement. "Husband does something stupid, wife gets mad, husband makes it up to her." Almost every show is like that on both shows. People liked Home Improvement, so why not just do the same with Everybody Loves Raymond?

The show hits people on a number of levels, and typically addresses things to which most people can relate. People don't necessarily love Raymond, but can relate to the situations which he gets himself into
Parents and childrearing, marriage (modern with Raymond and his brother and older marriages such as with his parents), in-laws, multiple kids (favortism), dealing with your job, aging, etc.
Depending on your own situation, you may not fully understand alot of the underlying themes.
As such, people love Raymond because his futility as an "Everyman" makes their lives seem better in comparison.

I really don't know why the shows is called "Everybody Loves Raymond" because the only one that really loves him is his mother. Everybody else gets on him because he acts stupid. I do love the show though.

My husband hates that show so much that every morning before he goes to work, he turns on the televison and makes sure that it isn't on channel 8. That way when he comes home from work and turns on the tv, that show isn't on. He says Ray's voice is like nails on a chalkboard.
Personally, I think it's mildly funny, especially the mother.

we dont love raymond we just love how his mother is all in their marital business and how deborah insults him, i guess its we love watching how people mess with raymond.
