Before the united states was a country, it was colonized
by england. it was a sort of satellite to the country of england.
the United States declared independence from england and
they fought the revolutionary war to be a separate country.
during colonial times the king of england was the ruler of the
colonies (which were only along the atlantic ocean at that time).
The other states were added later after USA was a country.
So the colonies operated basically as a part of england and under the control of england until the revolutionary war.
The revolutionary war was around 1776, so that has been about
240 years ago or so.
