I doubt it had anything to do with bravery and a whole lot more to do with hunger. I'm sure that people have been eating eggs since time immemorial and that the tradition of eating eggs carried on as we became civilized as eggs are one of those foods that OTHER foods give you for free! Eggs would have made sense because once you ran out you could eat the hen!

Animals eat the eggs and young of each other. Man is the Ultimate Animal (tm), and we eat eggs and the young of other species (think lamb and veal).

BTW, the word is "wondered."
