If its gravity HW then the pump only works to circulate the CH. If it's fully pumped there will be a motorised valve to stop circulation in the CH when only HW is required. In the first case the proposed room stat connects between the timer and the pump, and in the second case between the timer and the valve. You will have to ascertain which system you have and exactly how it is wired before commencing any alterations. Fit a progammable thermostat with an optimiser built in. Honeywell is good. Available as wireless version, so can go anywhere without obtrusive wiring.

Your system could be either fully pumped or pumped heating and gravity hot water. Depending on how old the system is. I would probably say it is the latter.

Have a look at your hot water tank. If it's gravity fed, the pipes will be 28mm, if it's pumped, they'll be 22mm or 15mm. With a pumped system, there will also be a motorised valve - usually near the pump.
