i had to choose a play for my play production class and i happened upon the humana festival play collections. they're full of new short plays that are truly great. the play collections in a library can be overwhelming, and these are guaranteed great shows.

RE: 10 -15 minute plays
General rule for movie scripts - for a regular sheet of double spaced dialogue, 1 page = about 1 minute. So you are looking for a script that if typed on regular paper would be 15 pages max.

* Go to local library and flip through books with short plays, I would look for 2 or 3 characters and not too many props, but just enough to practice gathering items/costumes to stage a quick scene. If the play does not have to be a published work, if you see a comedy sketch you like on TV, videotape it and transcribe the dialogue, but you may have to make adaptations to simplify for the stage. (Here is an example of a short story I published that I later simplified as a stage play: http://www.houstonprogressive.org/life-art.html Just three characters and a telephone.)

* If you could stage something by a local writer, ask a local theatre group if they host original short plays, and ask for a referral to a local writer who has published scripts. (There is a group in Houston called "10 by 10" that produces an annual contest for 10 different 10-minute plays.)

Making contacts like this is good for networking for your theatre interests, and may provide resources or referrals in the future.

Go to your local library and ask the librarian for books on plays, the childrens section will most likely have plays that are short, and easy to follow.
