has just had her checkup at the hostpital. apparently the doctor asked her a few questions about her general health and then said she was fine and free to go. how on earth can he tell that she is fine without doing a proper examination! she feels angry and unsure that everything is ok. has anyone had a hysterectomy and if so were you examined properly a few weeks after? i have told her she should book an appointment with her gp and explain her worries. is that the right advice?

this was her first and only checkup after the operation, so surely it is important they have a look to check that everything is normal!

I'm working in a gynaecology department at the moment. Some of the (experienced) consultants don't actually have a follow up appointment for their patients post-hysterectomy as long as the procedure was uncomplicated. The GPs usually pick up on any problems and re-refer patients back in if needs be. For the consultants who do see their patients again- it literally is a case of having a brief discussion of symptoms- and a quick vaginal examination to make sure theres no scar/granulation tissue (depending on the exact type of hysterectomy performed e.g. vaginal vs abdominal). If this is fine and the patient has no complaints she is left to get back to her life as normal. (its also worrying for some patients to keep having to come in to have a stranger examine them )

If you mother is still worried, she can always discuss concerns with her GP- they have all done a period of training in gynaecology so should know the answers to most of her queries.

I wish her good luck!!

Nothing wrong with it really no pain means things are healing well. He should have checked her insicion site/sites though to make sure they were healing properly. She is probably fine, she could go see her gp but he will proably want her to go back to the dr that did her operation, most doctors dont like "touching each others work" so to speak

Call the dr and/or his team to make sure. You have the right to ensure you get the best possible care. I don't think that my step mother had her hysterectomy site checked out until about 6 mos post op (this was also mid-90's).

why the checkup at the hospital?
Never heard of something this odd
I had my follow up with my GYN surgeon who performed the surgery

Is this a checkup for back to work release?
if so, yes those docs do not examine the patient- just ask general questions
her own MD should have given the physical exam for back to work release

my mom had a hysterectomy and an oopherectomy last summer. I think that she had about a month of recovery time before she went back to the doctor. He just wanted to check her incision and stuff. But I'm not sure, maybe you should call and ask :)

If she is unsatisfied with how the doc handled her case then yes she needs to see a new doc. One thing she should have done though is point blank asked the doc that did see her why he didn't need to check her more thorough. Tell her next time she needs to speak up and directly ask the doc. Tell her to see another doc so that she feel more assured that things are fine.

Although i didnt have a hysterectomy, i had a c-section. My post op examination was the same. "are you felling well?", "are you bleeding?", "are you in alot of pain?" ...go home then.
Tell her to go to another doctor to get a 2nd opinion jst incase if she is unsure.

He asked her if she was in pain?
No pain = no symptoms.
No symptoms = no problems.
