I would have to say the classic Volkswagen Bug. They were made so long ago and look how many are still on the road as everyday drivers. Performance-wise, I would have to say the McLaren F1. Fast as lighnting and looks so good that I would sell my soul to the Devil to have one.

The 72 Chevrolet Vega. Now there was a fine piece of machinery! When you went to a gas station back in the day, you told the attendant to check the gas and fill the oil.
At the drag strip, you checked it's 1/4 mile time with a calendar. The dash would be full of cracks before you made your first payment. The shocks lasted 2 days. The seats would split faster than a celebrity couple.
Oh yeah! Those were the days!

Best (sensible) car - the Volkswagon Golf Mk II. I had one that was nearly 20 years old, battered, stripped, and a puddle in the back - but it just kept on going!! They look so good, I love the shape, really nippy for a 1.3, handled brilliantly, and could out do most 4x4's in the snow on its wee skinny tires. My favourite car of all time. (As soon as I've got some money I'm on the look out for a GTI)

Best (not so sensible) car - probably the Pagani Zonda. Mind you, my mate's got a Posche 911 turbo, and I ain't gonna screw my nose up at that! Ridiculously fast, accelerates like a Tornado jet, and corners beautifully. Leaves a delicious smell of exhaust and impressive black rubber streaks as it disappears into the distance.

Depends on what you're looking for. All out performance or reliability.

My vote would go for the Honda Civic.
Affordable
Reliable
Good fuel economy
Customizable
Good for any age group, any social class. There are grandma's, house wives, salesman, and tuner kids all driving in the same cars.
I had a 10 year old Civic that had 200,000 miles on it. I tuned it, beat the crap out of it, drove it in New England winter, and sold it 2 years later for exactly what I paid for it. Name another car you could do that to?

I would have to give my vote to the A/C Cobra, the car that Caroll Shelby brought over and dropped a 289, and the 427 in, then went RACING.

My next vote would be the Ford GT40 and then the first and early 2nd generation Corvettes

You need to define best in what area? Buggati's Veyron is is an awesomely powerful car but I bet its a bugger for fuel.
Toyota Prius is the best at being green but its not very fast and looks like every other car around.
For me the car I druel over the most is the Pagani Zonda. It looks amazing, is properly fast and the sound is out of this world. Id sell my mother for one of them

Maclaren F1 because it held the title of world's fastest production car for nearly 10 years and it is the only 3 seater that I know of.

We had an early 1980s model Chevrolet Chevette. I say it's the best because we dogged that thing out but it kept going and going.... Seriously. Just like the energizer bunny.
