Hi,

The standard equation of a line is y= mx + b

so for lines of slope zero, m=0.

this includes all (horizontal line) equations of the form y = c as noted above, but it does not include (vertical line) equations of
the form x = c.

The reason for this is that for vertical lines, the slope is not zero, but is infinite. Use the point slope version of the equation to show this.

m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

for any two points on the line. for the case x = c; the denominator will always be zero yielding an infinite, or undefined slope.

Hope that helps,
Matt

Only horizontal lines have a slope of 0. Vertical lines have a slope of infinity.

Think about your general line formula, y = mx + b, and we know m is the slope.

If m = 0, which is what you are looking for, then y = b, so it's just a straight horizontal line.

Rearranging the formula above for x, x = (y-b)/m, and if x is a constant, then no matter what the m is equal to, y simply a function of that, and it makes a vertical line. Thus, m = infinity.

If I remember right ( been graduated for what, 3 years?) the slope is defined by how the line goes upward or downward on a curve(diagonal) so if there is a slope of zero, it would be a horizontal or vertical line.
