"6 times" means multiply times 6

"decreased by 6" means minus 6
"the result is the same as" means equals
"3 times" means multiply times 3

Therefore:
6X - 6 = 3X + 12

the number is x, put the word problem into a mathematical equation
6x-6 = 3x +12
isolate x by putting x to one side of the equation and the number to the other by adding/subtracting equally
6x(-3x)-6(+6)=3x(-3x)+12(+6)
simplify
3x=18
x=18/3
x=6
verify
6*6-6 = 30
6*3+12=30
x=6
