Trying to survive and be employed is my number one priority. Health and mental wellness comes as at least a poor second. It's hard to have health if you can't afford to eat right, can't afford to go someplace to exercise, and are extremely stressed.

Health is a luxury that belongs exclusively to the wealthy.

I agree to an extent. I've always been of the opinion that everyone should take care of themselves, and any help you can give is an act of generosity.

What changed my mind was getting married and having a baby this year. It's really strange, putting other people completely before yourself. As a husband and dad, that 'myself' has become 'my family'.

As for anyone else, I'll do what I can, but don't depend on it.

We all want to be on top of a situation whenever the need arises as this uplifts our egos to a higher degree. If one is in such a position, one feels they can absorb any form of pressure, be it ridicule or not they just feel on top. Thus you are able to assist anyone without considering the outcome; you will be in a position to appreciate life to the full and yes, when you are OK you just feel confident.

I agree. Me being okay puts less of a burden on my family knowing that I am taking care of myself. Our priorities have to change as we get older. For everyones sake.

Agreed, and your point is completely valid. So long as we are able to ensure that we are as fit and healthy as possible, we are then able to look after those around us. It's no use looking after everyone else 'first' if it causes us to get stressed and depressed - the biggest cause of illness today - and therefore not being able to look after our loved ones.

It depends in what sense you mean 'OK'. I'm sure that there are many people who are parents, perhaps, who put their children's needs before their own, regardless of whether they themselves are OK.

If you mean healthwise, I would agree with the statement.

I disagree with this statement.I care that my family is OK, my pets are OK and then I am OK. How can one consider ones self their number one priority, that is the height of self involvement and ugly.

I agree, with making sure that I am in good check....I feel that I can take care of my family and friends. But however if my family is sick etc....I put them above above any and everything.
