Avoid the Gremlins they were and are junk.
I have a 1990 Chevy Corsica I paid $500 for 3 years ago. It has been very reliable and it has only been about $600 a year to maintain. You can get a newer one with about 100,000 miles on it for around a a grand. Expect to put $500 - $600 a year into it for maintenance.

Some others you can get in your price range are Chevy Berettas (2 door Corsica), Cavaliers, Pontiac Grand Ams/ Grand Prix's or a few other mid sized cars.
Look for something that is already street legal in your state. Used dealers will have them sometimes; more likely you will get one private sale from a person that is looking to sell it for more than it is worth as a trade in (most cars sell for 3-4 times their trade in value.)

I am assuming from your post that you are interested in a cheap old car, as opposed to a cheap *older* common car from the Eighties or Nineties, of which there are many different car models to be had for under a grand, as a few others have suggested. However, you get what you pay for sometimes, and any desirable, good looking, unique, muscle car for under a grand is going to be in terrible shape most likely.

AS for AMC Gremlins, as someone else said, the best place to look for a Gremlin is on Craigslist, that is if you *really* want one. Avoid Ebay Motors, as there are a lot of rip off prices on there, and I don't recommend buying a car sight unseen unless you can afford to risk losing the money you spent for it, and remember it costs money to ship or go after the car unless it is local. Also, Ebay Motors seems ripe with all kinds of fraud and shill bidders as well. I am amused to often note the many suspicious "0" feedback bidders with recently created ID's that seem so willing to bid for a car sight unseen.

Back to AMC Gremlins....test drive one first, and you will see that they are essentially a shopping cart with a motor...my Girlfriend had a one owner 1976 model in the late Eighties I bought from a man who worked with my Mom for 500 dollars, and it was a cheaply built sled that was not all that good on gas, underpowered and quirky as well.

Other old cars that seem to be still fairly priced would be Chevy Corvairs from the Sixties, and you can still find reliable GM built boats from the Seventies for cheap if you look, cars like Buick Lesabre's, Olds Delta 88 and 98's, Pontiac Catalina's, big Lincolns and Cadillacs from the late Seventies etc etc but even those are dissapearing fast, as many of those old luxury cars are being snapped up by greedy investor types looking to exploit a buck and some are still being used as demolotion derby cars

It's not so much was old car is worth 500-1000 dollars, it's finding any car for 500-1000 dollars. Keep your eyes opened for cars in driveways, parking lots, etc. that are for sale. Check your local newspapers, etc. Craigslist is also pretty good for stuff like that. Good luck.

Don't expect much for a grand. And if you find a gremlin that runs AND drives, it'll be more than a grand.
