karate-i took kempo, but tae-kwon-do is also modernized. make sure it is self-defense-not to be a "gangsta". i wrestled for six years-that helps with close self defence significantly

I think it depends on your age, and determination. I studied Karate and taught it for 23 years. I loved it, and met a lot of really great people. But if i were to begin another Martial Art at the age i am now it would be an art like aikido. As it doesn't require as much strength. I also think that for a young person wrestling is a great sport.

It depends on what approach you want to take. If you want to hold your own in an "anything goes" street-fight situation i'd choose mma (mixed martial arts). This covers most types of fighting from plain punching and kicking to wrestling your opponents to the ground and forcing them into submission. Thing is, anyone could attack you out there and they are most likely to fight as dirty as they can, and if you chose something like ninjutsu or kung-fu you'd have to be at least very adequate to fend of some of the crazy beasts out there. This is only my opinion, other people may well disagree.

If you are really in shape, then I suggest Muay Thai, or Thai boxing. I have done it since 10, and it's intense. I've also boxed, wrestled and various other martial arts, but I was more at home with Muay Thai. If not, you could use what you know and just get into Pride FC or MMA in general

I take mixed martial arts, which combines many arts such as muay thai, kick boxing, and ju-jitsu. Judo and ju-jitsu are very good because it teaches you to handle yourself in close quarters with your opponent, which is how most fights end up. There is also a type of self defense called Krav Maga, which I have been hearing alot about. It is supposed to be very good for practical self-defense. I'm thinking of looking into it.
