I'm British so I don't know much about the democrat's political traidition, I'd love to know what you (Americans) think...

Will things be better for Iraq?

What I really want to know though is how will america improve now that things have changed?

Now that some of the Republicans out there have thrown in their "two cents" worth.... I'll try to give you a more comprehensible answer.
To tell you all the differences between the two parties would take pages, but I'll try to break down a little of it.

Better for Iraq? Time will tell. The major difference in regard to Iraq is that with the last election, Bush finally got the message that the people in this country are not agreeing with his "stay the course" philosophy. The arrogant, swaggering "cowboy" is learning a little lesson in being open to other ideas than just his own (or Cheney's and Rumsfeld's).
Obviously, what's being done there right now, isn't working. It's hoped that there will be some policy changes in Iraq now, to bring it to a speedy conclusion.
The only ones I have heard advocating a "cut and run" solution are the "left-wingers" (extremists of the Democratic Party). The rest of us recognize that to do so would be disastorous to the region. We do want to start a gradual pull-out, though, forcing the Iraqis to take a more active role in their own security and future. And get this mistake resolved once and for all.
We went in there under-manned (according to military higher-ups), poorly equipped, with no exit strategies.
The three top men in our government, with no military experience between them, unless you count a few weeks in the National Guard, decided they knew best and wouldn't listen to the generals. A lesson other countries should learn from. As I write this....Daddy Bush is trying to rein in his wayward son now.

As far as America is concerned....the system of checks and balances is being restored. For the last six years, the White House, Senate and Congress, were all controlled by the Republicans. A one-party system. Good for them, but bad for the country as a whole.
The worst that will happen is gridlock, as both sides battle with each other, and occassionally compromise. But the downward momentum will be stopped.

The excessive taxation you hear some of them whine about, is nonsense. That comes down to a fundamental difference between the two parties. Republicans are all for keeping as much money for themselves as possible, while Democrats have a more giving nature and believe in helping one's fellow man. Without making them totally dependent on you, of course.
Will taxes be raised? Hard to say. Our credit-card generation doesn't seem to understand that SOMEONE has to pay the bills!
I don't know where they think this money is coming from to pay for this war, and their representatives' "pork" projects.
Hopefully, this new congress and senate can cut back, or cut out, some of these projects....and rein in some of these people. If not, it comes back down to....someone has to pay the bills.

I could go on, but I've ranted long enough. Sorry this is so long. I felt I had to play counterpoint to a number of the responses above me.

In the case of WV, Obama is absolutely hurting Manchin's possibilities. West Virginian's like Manchin as Governor, and understand in two years he can't run for governor once more. In 2 years, this identical seat shall be to be had once more (that is most effective to fill the final two years of Byrd's time period.) I believe, plenty of West Virginians are both watching on the two years as a danger to ship a message to Obama, or as a two yr trial run to supply Raese a danger at a temp process, figuring out it may be modified whilst Manchin's time period as Governor is over. Either method, I believe in 2 years the seat shall be Manchin's.

First of all, America does not need improvement, you are referring to the greatest nation in the world. The Democrats tradition is to do every thing possible to destroy America, If you are British then you would probably wonder why they would be elected, i will tell you, they are consummate liars, they never tell the truth, but they get elected because too many people vote party line tickets no matter who is running.

Now that the democrats have control of the congress and the house what we have to look forward to is investigations and special committees.

and as far as Iraq, we will be in deep trouble if we "cut and run" like what the democrats want to do. If we stop fighting, our enemy, the terrorist groups won't stop fighting, either we fight them there or here.

Since most of the new Democrats are true Conservatives, I don't think the left will be able to change things that much.

bottom line is even though they took the house and senate . bush a republican is still over all in charge. as far as democrats go they wanna take tax payers money and give it to welfare moms with 6 kids in the house by 6 diffrent dads. they reduce the milatary them blame it on republicans when something goes wrong. there wont be much change. unless we get a democrat presedent

The Dem's will due more harm then good. They will raise our taxes, try to push for stem cell research(form of abortion) to become legal, give amnesty to the illegals, help the poor to stay on welfare longer(republicans want to help but help them to become more self sufficient), they support gays and lesbians and will try to legalize same sex marriages. As you see America will not improve but get worse. God help America!!

I hope things get better. We will have to wait and see. I know you are going to get a lot of responses suggesting that this is a sure sign of the coming of the Apocalypse, but I think that is just a combinations of rampant paranoia and sour grapes.
