Huge mistake is correct. What could possibly be wise about the whole exercise? Wise to put the shiites in power thus strengthening Iran? Wise to kill 150,000 Iraqis? Wise to put our soldiers in the middle of a civil war? Is it wise to execute Saddam thus heightening the sectarian violence? Nothing about it is wise.

As the saying goes, "hindsight is 20/20". How soon people forget what life was like under Saddam's dictatorship. Thousands died as a direct result of this lunatic and his clan. Women were treated like cattle, the poverty level was through the roof, there was no freedom of the press. The infrastucture barely worked, all the money from oil exports was being diverted directly to Saddam's bank accounts, torture was viewed as a sport by his son Uday, The average Iraqi lived in fear of being taken away in the dead of night and tortured/killed for no reason. Saddam was paranoid about conpiracies, He had no qualms about gassing hundreds of Kurds in the north, he was working on a nuclear enrichment program, and vowed to exterminate Israel This much we know.
People seem to think the United States went into this without a good reason, and that George Bush was gleefully enjoying the death of U.S. soldiers. NO dicision to go to war is ever made lightly. A mistake? As always, this will be debated for a hundred years. Did we expect too much in the way of gratitude by the average Iraqi for getting rid of a murderous dictator? Yes. Did we asuume too much in the area of the so-called 'insurgents"? That Iraq would come together inder the banner of peace and democracy? Yes. There are many things we know now that could not have been known then.
It is impossible to know what the 'man in the street' really thinks about us being there because the country is too fractured by civil unrest and suicide bombers to have any sort of honest election as to whether or not they WANT us there. For any Iraqi to become a police officer is almost certain suicide, the 'insurgents' kill them at every opportunity.
On the plus side, the things you DON'T hear about....in spite of the war, you really should consider reading some success stories. Unlike what we hear in the media, bombings, soldiers dying, bloody battles, it's enlightening to read this document found at http://www.usaid.gov/iraq/accomplishments/success_stories_0206.html I hope you will.

"cut and run liberals" **** you conservative, it was a huge mistake. Afghanistan not so much but Iraq yes. The democracy we installed there is only for oil, putting in a democracy is a good thing but it will never happen. Or at least not yet. They still can not decide on it without killing each other.

in retrospect we can see now that the US never should have invaded Iraq. Afghanistan was okay because it was a direct response to 9/11. But the invasion of Iraq was based on false intelligence and the premise of a "preemptive war."

I think a lot of people have now realized what a big mistake it was. That's the reason why the war is now so unpopular and why Bush's approval ratings are in the toilet.

Only you Libs will come to that conclusion, the war in Iraq was a huge, brilliantly concocted scheme to entice the terrorist there so we do not have to fight them in the streets of American You cut and run liberals would like to see America destroyed and will try every ploy to accomplish it. It was difficult but i did manage to put political partisanship aside long enough to answer your partisan question.

The voter has already done that. However, this administration can hardly wait to put the blame on the newly elected Dems who are finally going to wind down this war. The "defeat" will be put on them.
