Animals to get food, for escapade, and mating, use signs to communicate any relevant information they can perceive or have to give out. For mating, they usually make use of their physical edge over one another, in order to show superiority, so that they can catch the eye of their desired mate. For finding food, they usually move out in groups, and the one who finds it, communicates with the rest of the bunch by signs like sound etc. For escapade, animals again use their social unison to somehow outnumber the predator. For example, bisons, elephants, etc. when attacked by predators, run in herds, so as to protect their young ones and outnumber the predator.

All animals have different instincts, self defense mechanisms and mating rituals. You would have to look for a specific species to find an accurate description.
