An ergonomic mouse pad makes you hold your wrist in the proper position to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, which affects people that make a lot of repetitive motions, such as happens when using the mouse.

If you use the computer for many hours every day,as I do, then over time you could possibly have wrist pain. I was in the early stages of carpel tunnel until I switched to the mouse pad with the wrist rest, and after that I improved 100%. Do it now before you show any symptoms of wrist strain and prevent having to worry about it. (It feels better to your arm, too.)
