A factor tree is a structure used to find the prime factorization of a positive integer.

The factor tree is constructed for a particular number by looking for pairs of numbers that multiply together to give that number.

These pairs are added below the original number and are sometimes called "leaves".

If a leaf is a prime number, it can then be circled

Leaves which are not prime can be broken into further pair of numbers.

The prime factors are the circled numbers

The factor tree ends when the remaining leaves are all prime factors and so there are no pairs of numbers that multiple to give that number.

The pairs of numbers that are excluded from a factor tree are 1 multiplied by that number.

In this case 19 is a prime factor and so the factor tree will just be the number 19.

The factors are thus only 19 and 1.

A factor tree will look like this, for example:

And so the prime factorization is 3*2*2
